15-35% mileage increase

aldive said:
That logic is somewhat flawed. There are confirmed means of escalating mileage that Ford does not use in its SUV flee; eg, the use of synthetic lubricants.
That is an opinion...............not flawed logic.

im with robb on that aldive... they arent going to put synthetic in in it to save the customer $... they dont care about it at that point... its cheaper for them to use dino, which is perfectly fine and acceptable

also with the cleaners/paint thinner... its a sound idea... however that stuff is nasty on rubber products, not saying there is really rubber in the engine, but... there are seals of all sorts... and stuff like that eats seals!

Supposedly its just octane booster. There hasn't been enough studies done to prove whether or not it improves gas mileage. You also have to consider what type of damage it can possibly to do the internals of the motor.

it should improve mileage by cleaning carbon deposits much like seafoam, but seafoam has been tested for use on vehicles.. im not dumping paint thinner into my gas tank... which is what acetone and toulene are.....

Toluene is THE aromatic used by all gasoline companys to boost octane, it makes up approx 15% of the ingrediants in ave gas
It is perfectally safe in all engines.
Is also the main ingrediant in all off the shelf(useless) octane boosters.
Granted, both are used in the paint industry.
Acetone is also a byproduct of metabolism, it can be measured in your breath

So, Spindlecone You seem to have some chemistry knowledge. Will Acetone do as claimed in the quanities perscribed??

Seriously dougbt it, will not hurt to try IMO, am wondering, since acetone binds with water, and gas has a certain water content, by elimenating water content, will that get better MPG? dunno, makes some sense

My question is, how much does this stuff cost? If it only cost a dollar and you need to add only a couple of ounces then good deal. If it costs 4 bucks and you have to add 2 gallons then whats the point?

I think they are both a couple bucks per pint, that's why I'm curious about the Acetone.

Acetone is cheap. I cant remember (been a while since i bought some) but i think its about $4 a gallon. You would only use 4 ounces per tank, so a gallon would last for a long long time.

Im wondering, if it improves fuel mileage that much..... why are we just hearing about it? Toluene and Xylene have been used forever in the racing circles to increase octane ratings... but no one's ever mentioned acetone as some sort of miracle fuel mileage improver.

Ive got some in the garage, and ive been keeping a mileage log for the last few months. Might give it a try. :)

DO IT J, if it's old, pour some in a glass, has to be perfectally clear (do not drink any) if it's cloudy, is no good.
Keep us posted, who knows, your Quest for 30 MPG may just be around the corner :D

Ill wait till someone ####s up there motor, its not worth a new motor for 2mpg..lol goodluck

Anyone know their chemistry? Acetone is paint thinner right? Could that be good/(not bad) for your fuel lines and seals? What does it do for the O2 sensors and catalytic converter? Sparkplug damage? I don't think acetone burns/combusts/sparks at the same temperature as gasoline. What about the acetone in the oils? I would think that it would break down the oil. But that's just me.

Anyone got some spare fuel lines, seals, plugs, sensors, and gasoline around to put some acetone on for testing?

Wow, there's a whole 'nother page I missed.

According to the data in the beginning of this thread, most has already been done, put seals etc in acetone, yea they will be destroyed.
But they are talkin a minute mixture of gas and acetone

Well, anyone want to mix some gas and acetone on spare seals and report? I can't imagine something that is harmful not doing something bad despite it's dilution.

How have you determined that acetone is harmfull? just curious

Anything that someone doesn't understand MUST be harmful .....

I'm with aldive on this one. Just because the big oil companies didn't tell us to use this doesn't mean it is bogus. I printed and read the first article on the train and it seemed to make sence. I'm a little nervous about trying it myself but yet I'll dump a pint of dry gas in because it was on the store shelf. The amounts are so small I can't imagine them doing much harm even it it were harmful.

My question is how does this dilute to the whole 20 gallons? With only a few ounces I can't imagine it would mix with ALL the fuel right away.

I want a brave sole to try this before I do though :D
