Toluene is THE aromatic used by all gasoline companys to boost octane, it makes up approx 15% of the ingrediants in ave gasjimabena74 said:it should improve mileage by cleaning carbon deposits much like seafoam, but seafoam has been tested for use on vehicles.. im not dumping paint thinner into my gas tank... which is what acetone and toulene are.....
Seriously dougbt it, will not hurt to try IMO, am wondering, since acetone binds with water, and gas has a certain water content, by elimenating water content, will that get better MPG? dunno, makes some senseAlbino 94LTD said:So, Spindlecone You seem to have some chemistry knowledge. Will Acetone do as claimed in the quanities perscribed??
I think they are both a couple bucks per pint, that's why I'm curious about the Acetone.Josh said:My question is, how much does this stuff cost? If it only cost a dollar and you need to add only a couple of ounces then good deal. If it costs 4 bucks and you have to add 2 gallons then whats the point?
DO IT J, if it's old, pour some in a glass, has to be perfectally clear (do not drink any) if it's cloudy, is no good.james t said:Acetone is cheap. I cant remember (been a while since i bought some) but i think its about $4 a gallon. You would only use 4 ounces per tank, so a gallon would last for a long long time.
Im wondering, if it improves fuel mileage that much..... why are we just hearing about it? Toluene and Xylene have been used forever in the racing circles to increase octane ratings... but no one's ever mentioned acetone as some sort of miracle fuel mileage improver.
Ive got some in the garage, and ive been keeping a mileage log for the last few months. Might give it a try.![]()
According to the data in the beginning of this thread, most has already been done, put seals etc in acetone, yea they will be destroyed.Interstate said:Anyone know their chemistry? Acetone is paint thinner right? Could that be good/(not bad) for your fuel lines and seals? What does it do for the O2 sensors and catalytic converter? Sparkplug damage? I don't think acetone burns/combusts/sparks at the same temperature as gasoline. What about the acetone in the oils? I would think that it would break down the oil. But that's just me.
Anyone got some spare fuel lines, seals, plugs, sensors, and gasoline around to put some acetone on for testing?
How have you determined that acetone is harmfull? just curiousInterstate said:Well, anyone want to mix some gas and acetone on spare seals and report? I can't imagine something that is harmful not doing something bad despite it's dilution.
And anything that some internet stranger promises "seat of the pants" improvements MUST be beneficial...........aldive said:Anything that someone doesn't understand MUST be harmful .....
