I've got a 2000 XLT with 16 inch wheels, can I swap them for 15 inch from an older model?

No problemo

Should not be a problem. The only thing to keep in mind is that you want your profile to be as close to the same as what you have now. Any good tire store will know what to put on them (size wize).

double check you brake rotor clerance.

From what I know, the XLT came with 15" rims. Check the door sticker for tire size and type of rim.

doing so will also mess up your speedometer reading .and you will use more gas .

Yes, you can swap them. As said, profile will determine how much your speedo will be off.

The sizes that cam stock on the 15" and 16" rims are choosen to have almost identical circumference of the tire, so th ereadings are not that much off. Also, if the Explorer is XLT, it came with 15" originally.
