I have 3 supposedly 1979 F150 Dana 44 axles. Two of those axles have outer shafts like the bottom one and the other has outer shafts like the top. The top outer has the snap ring further out than the bottom. This threw me for a loop because when I installed shafts in my exploder I got them mixed up and had to install a stock hub on one side and a warn premium on the other. The top will work with a warn premium hub and the bottom works with the stock manual hub. Any info would be great because I couldn't find anything when I searched.

See this is odd. Ill have to see if I have a picture of this but the one on my explorer now has two clip rings. One in both places as your two.

I'd have to go look at my spares, but I just mill a 2nd grove into the right spot like Burns has. Maybe that one is off a chevy or something.

This is very interesting, I just went and looked all my spares, and it seams I have both too

I have 4 outers total. 3 are 1/2" from end to center of clip groove, and the other is 1/4" from end to center of groove.

now two of those 1/2" are out of a 8 lug 44 for sure as they are spares out of Ranjos front axle, in his latest build. The other one I have I got off Pirate for cheap.

The 1/4" is another spare I don't even where came from  It's attached to a long shaft for the passenger side of my 44, but now I'm wondering, because I would to hate to have been dragging it around all these years, when it may not have worked any way. :banghead: My axle had factory hubs on it originally when I got it, and I switched it over to warn premiums.

Next I'll need to pull a hub and see what is in there now. I'm guessing it's the 1/2" stub. Never the less. what ever one is wrong I'll be cutting a new groove in to correct this issue before the next trip out.

Is the spline count the same?

They are both the same spline because both factory and the warn hub fit on these.... the problem is getting the snap clip to fit cause the groves are at different spots

Who has the warn premium hubs that are on the the stub shaft like the bottom one in the picture? I am wondering if my warn premiums are for a ford cause mine fit the top stub shaft. I will have to take one of my premium hubs off of my 1995 daily driver f150 and see if there is a difference
