1988 ranger needs new engine

Hello, I am trying to find out what Ford years/models with 4 bangers would be candidates as engine donor for a 1988 ranger with a 2.0 in it. Lots of cheap engines on Ebay and im temped to get one, but i want the swap to be as direct as possible. and since there are 2.0, 2.3, 2.5 4 bangers in a variety of Ford cars and trucks im strugglin here with this one. I know of a few 96 and 97 rangers near me in a junk yard with 2.3. any help would be great you guys know your stuff

Welcome to this forum! If you are putting an engine into it, why not upgrade to a V6 4.0L SOHC?

i wanted to stick with the 4 banger, fuel, ease of swap, dont need the extra hp or anything like that, it is a back up vehicle, or for when the the other trucks are in use and need to make a quick trip. nothing special about it. Id just juck it out except for my lil brother just put a few hundred into Fuel pumps on it, and in march it got 4 new shocks, new exhaust, spare tire, fresh plus, wires, distributor cap etc. then in april it got new uniroyal liberators so its got good parts in it, just needs new motor. I will know more for sure once i get it back home to take a look.

...the 2.3 is a different monster and has 8 plugs on a four cylinder...i am not that familiar with the other motors but i believe you have to get the computers and harnesses to do the swap...you might check with 410fortune on this...
