I just found out that my daughters explorer has been having some starting problems. When she attempts to start, it has the click click click and then engages and starts. Somestimes it will do the clicks and then the starter will freewheel and grind (you know, that gut wrenching sound when you know that the ring gear is grinding down). I have replaced the starter (that did have two teeth chipped) and have the same problem. I have since replaced the fender solenoid (twice), battery, and both cables. Still having the exact same problem. Does anybody know where I might be having the voltage drop? Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to the forum! Did you happen to check the flywheel when you changed starters? It's possible that it's chewed up also. Bailey.

The flywheel does have some gouging, but nothing that is huge. I didn't have a chance to turn the motor over by hand when I had the starter out last, but I think I have a tooth or two out when it freewheels. But it still doesn't explain why I am having an unidentified voltage dopr.

Sorrry, my quick reply is on my post.....I'm new to this.

Could it be a sticky alternator? Possible loose ground out since you swapped the cables? I don't think the connection could be corroded on the starter but it never hurts to check lol. I know that first gen's have problems with voltage regulation (jumpy volt meter). I've replaced my battery, both cables, and starter and still get a jump all the time. I heard there's an issue with one of the three (I believe) wires that are connected to the alternator.

You could always take it to autozone and have them do a field test on the alternator, check voltage on battery before it's started. It will at least give you a positive rule out on those options lol.

Best of luck!
