1993 Mazda Navajo

Hi!
New member with a question about my 1993 4x4 Mazda Navajo which of course is an undercover Explorer. 4x4 engages intermittedly, noticed that the 4x4 engage switch is not illuminated. Should I replace that as first step or do you recommend checking something else?
