Just joined the forum yesterday so there's alot of eggshell left on me.
A buddy and I are working on 94 XLT 4x4 w/4.0 that we bought "as is" for $200.00 from a repair shop that was called to remove it from the interstate (abandoned). We were looking for engine wiring harness for the 92 we had that mice had chewed thru over the winter. After picking up the 94 we were surprised to find it to only have 141,000 miles on it and other than the transmission issue it was in really good shape. We decided to use the 92 as a donor and swapped out the trany's replaced all shocks, brakes, radial arm bushings, and muffler. we also had to replace a missing electric shift solenoid but still don't have 4 wheel drive, we were able to track it down the automatic hubs, unfortunately the Chilton manual we have does't cover replacement or repair. We found the hubs were packed with grease, so far no signs of damaged or broken parts, any help with instruction on disassembly and repair/replacement would be greatly appreciated!

94 Explorer Auto Hubs

Thanks yeah61794,

Thanks for the quick feed back and the link, I plan on degreasing the whole assembly with Purple Power brand degreaser (hoping to avoid the wheel bearings) if it all comes out clean with not defects, what do you recommend to use to keep lubbed?

I used to just fill the hub with ATF, let it soak for a while, and dump it out. Hubs were still working when I swapped them to Manual hubs (when we started to do real wheeling)..

Thnx Maniak,

ATF? thatz amazing, these things were packed with graphite type grease.
knowing how thin ATF fluid is, these thing would never kick-in.

We'll make it happen, that for info!!

Cleaned up one of the hubs last night, nothing appeared defective is there anything specific I should be looking for?

@yeah61794.. I've been looking for that link, thanks.

...

I buy autohubs every chance I get. Some salvage yards think they're gold plated or something (@ $50 each), but sometimes one can get 'em for $20/pair!

I use kerosene and/or brake clean and rinse/soak/swish until they seem pretty clean - then take an air hose to them. You will get dirty! yuk! then rinse, recycle, repeat a few times. Then I break out the ATF. heh

To me, autohubs are my "planned failure point". After upgrading u-joints, inspecting axles and all that (plus I don't wheel extremely hard).. I figure a autohub is the easiest part to fix on the trail. :)
