Hi:

My 1994 Explorer's 4WD is not engaging or lighting up on the panel (push button). I was on here earlier and it was suggested that it was the shift motor but after having that replaced, it still wasn't working, then all of a sudden, it functioned for the mechanic (whatever fiddling around he was doing), I brought it home and it worked for a couple of days and now, has ceased to function again. Does anyone have any ideas? It's very frustrating !!!!!

Thanks !

Hi, when you get in your explorer turn off all music or anything that may make any noise, make sure you have close to silence, press the button and listen to see if you hear a clicking in the driver side rear. If you don't hear this it could be the relay or switch or possibly the wiring.

Hi:

Thanks for the reply. I've tried it in dead silence and I don't hear a thing.....i.e., the usual clicking. Pardon my ignorance, but where is the relay? It's not the fuse; checked that.

Thanks !

There is a relay in the rear quarter panel that transfers the power to the shift motor on the t-case. Have you checked the sticky on diagnosing your 4X4 problem?
