Hi Guys,

Thanks in advance for any recommendations. My Explorer has about 185k miles on it now. I've had the truck for approximately seven years and it has been a good one. I was coming home with my kids from church last night and smelled something. That something ended up being from my transmission. I've been good about checking the fluid because I know that the tranny on these trucks is the weakness. I'm really easy on the truck for the most part and baby it. I noticed that it began having issues going into overdrive on the last quarter mile to our house. When I dropped the selector into 'D', it seem to drive better. The fluid was not a bad color, but it did have a burn smell to me when I checked it this morning. I change the fluid and filter every year.

Any recommendations? Would it hurt for me to drive it to a tranny shop? How difficult would it be for me to change the fluid/filter without a lift? BTW, I did have a check engine light just previous to the bad smell, but like I said the fluid level was good when I checked it this morning.

Thanks.....

It appears there are plenty of indications that something is wrong inside the transmission. However, you might still want to check do some basic EEC-IV tests to make sure the OD problem isn't electrical outside the transmission. Where the CEL came on, I'd suggest starting by pulling codes and go from there.

Ok, I have to make corrections to my statements. I meant to say that instead of a check engine light, it was the check oil light. I need an engine oil change now because it just so happens to be at the change time. I took the truck for a quarter mile drive and the OD worked fine. Just need to get the oils changed and most likely it will be OK I'm hoping. Waiting to here back from Yellowcat who is also from this area to see if he knows a good tranny shop here in town to do a check on it. I'll still see about pulling the codes. Last time I went to both Autozones, their code reader wasn't working.
