There's a bolt that is known to sometimes come loose and cause problems up on shifter column area....might want to snug it up / take off and put loc-tite on threads... see here:

Also is your red shifter 'position indicator needle' off/not lined up perfectly.... common.... there's an adjustment wheel for this...need to remove bottom panels below steering column.... see pics- yellow arrow is pointing at black adjustment wheel....gently turn with finger...
BOTH OF these are accessed from same area with head on floor looking up...

Yes to the needle! Thank you!!! Not a functional issue but a little annoying for sure!
I'll check that bolt today. Luckily my accelerator pedal bracket looks and feels fine.

I'm noticing a lot of the window trim and rubber is getting bad. Rubber seems stiff and shrinking so there are some gaps. Is there anything to be done for this? I think maybe some of the trim could be carefully removed and re-painted. I would guess the rubber is hard (impossible?) to come by.

Amazing how something like the shift indicator needle position can FEEL so good to correct! I'm not sure if there's too much play in the shifter lever, but I'd guess it's normal for 25 years old. Now that I have the needle centered, when jiggling the lever the center of the needle goes from the left edge of a given letter to the right edge. The bolts don't seem loose but I'll get in there with an allen wrench to be sure.

I did this repair on a grand marquis recently. There are nylon shift tube bushings that wear out. The part is $10 but you have dig into the steering column. That really fixed that issue. Sometimes I would accidentally drive in 2, it got that bad. Also had to wiggle sometimes to start.
