1995 explorer transmission question

I am getting an excellent condition 95 E Bauer 4x4 from a co worker for nearly nothing. $800. The body and interior are excellent, runs great. They were driving it a few months back and were at a light when they lost all gears and fluid was all over the place she said. They were told the transmission needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Doesn't it sound more like a seal issue? I looked to see if it may have been leaking at the radiator cooling lines but it looks more like under the trans. it's been sitting for a few months so i guess I will add some fluid and see what the deal is. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Clean it up, dump some fluid in her, and see where it leaks out at.

That's probably what I'm going to do as soon as I get the truck next week. I don't know if it makes a difference, but when I was under the truck, there is a label on the tranny that says. replaced under the TSB ###-### do not service. I am thinking this has been replaced before?
