1996 & 1997 transmission interchangeability?

i have a ford 1996 explorer sport trac. unfortunately the tranny went at only 109k miles. But someone i know can get me a tranny from a 1997 explorer 4.0L v6. i wanted to know if the tranny from that truck would fit my truck.

Are both of the engines 4.0 SOHC engines? If so, then I would think that it would fine. And welcome to the forum!

EDIT:On second thought, make sure that both TRANNYs, not engines, are the same!

Car-part.com lists 96 as its own animal. No cross over to 97 and later years.
97 lists 2WD, 4WD, SOHC and OHV versions as well as with and without "overdrive drum sensor"
96 only lists 4 automatic transmissions. 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive versions for 6 cyl, and the same for 8 cylinder.

Also, Sport Tracs were introduced in 2001, so you have a 96 sport, that should help you a bit when looking for parts

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the transmissions section. Your 1996 has a 4R55E 4 speed transmission. The 1997 has a 5R55E 5 speed transmission. They could be interchanged providing that you do some work to them (range sensor, TCC, EPC, etc). There is an extra sensor on the 1997 5R55E that could be left alone.

Sure thats a 4r55e or 5r55e auto trans from a 4.0 explorer 4wd
97 model year should be a 5r55e version
