Hello,

I have a 96 4.0L that did a weird thing today. my wife was starting the car and she said that it popped and some smoke came out from the hood. it then started running rough at idle but would drive fine. she came home and I drove the truck and it sounded like a vacum leak. so i cleaned the IAC and it helped a little so i started squirting starter fluid to chek for leaks and i could get the truck to idle well when i put fluid on the underside of the upper intake on what looks like (looking from the passanger side toward the drivers inbetween the intake spaces) a flat plate attached to the underside of the upper intake. I was wondering what it was and if I get a gasket set does this thing get replaced or are my symptoms an IAC problem!! cant figure it out and cant find a pic of the underside of the upper intake to see what it is that i am squirting. any help would be great!!!

thanks

more info

hello,

here is some more info or i guess a question. can a bad intake gasket "blow out" so that one minute it runs fine the next it wont idle etc. i am going to try a IAC but I am also wondering if the gaskets can make the vehicle almost undrivable or will it just idle funny.

fixed

well stupid me but when the car "popped" it blew the vac hose off the pcv valve. easy fix at least!!

my 91 used to do that when i would not hold the key long enough when starting the truck just about every time i think its because the rubber boot on the vacuum line is old and does not hold as well as it used to.
