Hey guys, long time fan and been a member for a while but stumped on where to start with helping a friend with his limping explorer. First post i've made in years, glad to see the forum continues to grow.

I see most the issues with these transmissions, is that they suck. Jk. But... heres the issue my friend is having, and i'm hoping maybe he's lucky and can get off easily.

All his gears still work and go in gear fine, reverse works, 2nd works, but if he tries using normal drive, it'll just rev and go nowhere. If he's already moving with 2nd, he can usually toss it into 3rd and drive once already going 30mph or so. Basically my question/first though is that its not building proper pressure to move the vehicle, and so his torque converter is probably burned up and needs replacing.

Basically, since its not an issue with grinding noises and gears not working at all, its a little different than the common band or valve body issue, or at least from the sound of it.

Can anyone please give me input on your oppinion on whether its something internal or a simple switch out of a torque converter?

I appreciate any help. It's a 4x4 with the 4.0L but drive not working/slipping bad happens in both 2WD and 4WD or at least he usually only drives it in 2WD, basically, i'm not worried about his 4x4 working or not, just trying to get him back on the road.

Thanks guys.

The Torque converter doesn't supply pressure for the transmission. The Torque Converter hub turns the hydraulic Pump which supplies the trans pressure for operation, this is a solid mechanical connection.
