1996 Explorer Knocking Noise

Anybody have an idea of what this noise could be.

It's a 1996 Eddie Bauer with V6 4x4.

It's been making it since I've had it (bought it at the beginning of this year). The noise falls away to a murmur when accelerating or cruising.

Thought I'd see if i could fix it since I am upgrading my truck.

I could be way off base, but it could even be a belt tensioner.
Pull the belt off and start it (not for very long, of course).
