1996 "P" XLT EGR Removal/Install

I reviewed a bunch of posts regarding the Explorer'd EGR on this site. However, has anyone removed one from a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT V8. It's in the back of the engine right in front of the Transmisison dip stick tube. I can't get anything back there to get it off. BTW...I am just trying to replace the EGR Position Sensor.

You know what happened...

Since I unplugged the sensor when I originally attempted to replace it, the Check Engine light has not come back on. It's been a couple of days...so far so good. That may have done enough to fix it.

The EGR valve as a PITA to get off. Seems like one bolt is a 1/2" and the bottom is a 9/16" - or vice versa.I ended up having to cut a wrench in half to get mine off. To get the Position sensor off itself is not too back. There are 3 small nuts holding it onto the valve.I don't remember their size, but once you get the nuts off, you slide the position sensor back and up to get the pin out of the valve.

If you're getting a code for a EGR valve than I suggest taking a look at the DPFE sensor as well. Pull the vac lines off and see if there is a bunch of corrosion on the ends of the sensor. I was getting a EGR code and it turned out to be the DPFE. Hell of a lot easier to fix than the EGR that's for sure.

The 96 and early 97 V8's do not have a DPFE sensor. Jsut the EGR valve, position sensor, and soleniod.

Oh yeah I forgot he had a V8.

Mine is gone..... I have an 00' which makes it easy for me. Mine is external egr. If you have a problem that i might of went through let me know

I see the two nuts holding the egr to remove. However, because I cannot "see" the lower nut, I assumed it was the same size as the upper nut. That's what gave me problems. Thanks! Anyway, the light has not come back on since I unplugged it so I might be good to go.
