I have a 1992 explorer with a bad engine, and recently ran across a 1996 with a bad rear axle. Would the rear axle on the 92 be a direct bolt in on the 96?

Would the engine and transmission from the 96 bolt into the 92? Or would it be a wiring nightmare?

any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

it wont be a wiring nightmare to swap, but it will not be easy....

the axles will physically swap, but you would have to make sure the gear ratios are the same, and also do some more tweaking to deal with the abs system (probably not even equipped on the 92) and deal with the 96 having rear disk brakes and hte 92 having rear drums.....

although both are physically possible, it isnt going to be a bolt in swap.....

The 96 Explorer, some of them (AWD, and V8) have factory traction bars attached to the 8.8 rear axle, in order to retain them you would have to weld on mounts.

You can put the disc brakes on the 92 rear end.

However it is likely cheaper to fix the rear end thats on the 96, or get a 96-2000 rear and use that.
