I just bought a 1996 Explorer with a 5.0 V8. It has a ticking sound during acceleration only. It sounds like its coming right through the dash. I was searching on here and I couldnt find a staight answer on how exactly you know if its the exhaust manifold or the EGR tube leaking. The sound doesnt go away after the car has warmed up. I can't hear any of the sounds when the hood is open because the cooling fan is to darn loud. I am prepared to fix either problem or both, which is why I bought the car, but if I only have to fix one I will be better off. Can you guys give me somethings to look for?

Thanks in advance,
Neil

I do not know how well it'll work -- but you can let it sit and make sure its cool. Start it up and have someone with a few rags or something protective go to the exhaust and plug it. This should make the leak louder and you may be able to figure out which one it is. I know they're hard to tell, but just hope they aren't the manifolds. Thats a lot of work for leaky manifold.

Is this the only way? Sounds like it will do more harm than good.

i just got my egr tube. it looks a little different than the original, they got rid of the bendable accordian shaped piece and made it one smooth, curved tube. Hopefully it fits on my aftermarket oem exhaust manifold.
