1997-01 v-8 5.0 ticking noise under load - EGR Tube identification-part number

Re: chug chug SOLVED-THANKS!!!

Thanks Turtle for the advice: Change the plugs.

My Reply:

...Yup!

Although it was A SINGLE plug (#2) and was just coincidental that I caught it before spending $50 and another couple hours under the fenderwells and hood!

So: I'm on my way out and decided to start it after a night with a disconnected battery. No luck-but; I spy the #2 plug wire arcing to the upper a-arm bushing! AHA!

Bad plug wire:No
Tight cap:Yes
Tight plug:Yes
Bad plug giving a spark no where else to go: YES!

Pull the plug: Dark as night and gasoline saturated!

Toss and replace, and VaROOOOOoooooom!!!!

Now THAT'S the 302 I love to hear purring away! (esp through 11yr-old muffs)

Now: How does changing out an EM/ERG foul a plug???!!!

At any rate: YOU NAILED IT!

Thanks!

Now I can drag that trailer w/my daughters '99 LTD 5.0L Explorer up to Anchorage and put that drivers-side manifold to the test next!

I got that ticking noise now on my '97....I'm thinkin it may be the header, but gonna take it to my local (trusted) exhaust shop to be sure.

97 passenger side hdr replacement

Saw the new post yesterday. Though I'd post the link to my Doorman replacement photos. Not difficult if you pull the wheel and fenderwell liner and associated vacuum components on the fenderwell liner.

Pulling the ERG riser tube; that was another story! Sawzall, PB Blaster and homemade tool. 24hrs later it was loose! You will need the 1 1/8 closed end 12pt min to get that baby loose!

A little tight getting a wrench on a few of the header bolts/nuts, as the Doorman folk didn't dimple the tubes at the flange. A crows-foot socket would have come in handy.

Best of luck 97expV8!

Got a ticking noise on my 96' 5.0... but only on start up, hoping it is not the manifolds, I am suspecting it's the lifters.

ticking

I have ticking too dk what it is as i accelerate it gets louder and stalls and is hard to start back up mines a 97 explorer sohc i changed intake manifold gaskets and changed oil and coolant thier was oil in my intake manifold too any ideas?

Old bump.. Noticed a ticking as well (when cold) from drivers side... I have torquemonster headers, new copper gaskets (double tightened before and after engine warmed up), brand new exhaust, EGR has been DELETED... Don't hear it under load or driving, no drive-ability issues.. So, not sure what it is in my case lol.

Yep, you guessed it. I to have the dreaded "tick". As others have said, it started out minor, only when cold, and diminished on warmup. Went to my girlfriends house (60 mile drive) on Monday, drove home Tuesday, stopped at a neat little stream for a photo op (I'll post them elsewhere. :) ) which required I drive through some mud to get there. (very little mud). On the way home I noticed the ticking was much worse. Stopped at a local exhaust shop to let an expert listen to it and he confirmed its coming from the exhaust manifold.

This thread has been helpful already, but have just a few more questions. Is there a reliable way to tell if its just a bad gasket, or a cracked manifold? Or is it best just to replace the manifold while you're there anyway? Is the left side prone to cracking as well? I'd like to only do this once. The exhaust guy gave me a horror story about replacing manifolds, but he used a newer F250 with a 5.4 as an example. According to the local Ford dealer its a 2.5 hour job. Which means it should take me 5 hours at least. LOL

Any help is appreciated!

Mike--
It could be the egr tube leaking. I assume yours has the cast manifolds, usually they are not a problem, however the manifold bolts do loosen and jump out once in a while.

I've tried running my hand around the manifold and EGR tube, but can't feel anything.. tried to do it when it was cold but didn't feel a leak. Any helpful tips for finding where its leaking from?

Without hearing it, I can suggest a seafoam treatment.

Since the burn out of seafoam will make a lot of smoke, the leak may become visible. If your present spark plugs are good, I would get a cheap set of plugs from walmart to do the seafoam treatment as this will sometimes foul the spark plugs. If you intend to change them anyway go ahead and risk it. :D

Ya know, I was just talking to my roommate the other day about that very thing.. was saying "If only I could SEE the exhaust I could find the leak!". I even wondered out loud if I did a seafoam treatment would the smoke come out of the leak?? LOL Now that I have the blessing of an Explorer Elite I'll have to give it a shot. (Just as soon as I get the darned Tbird running again! LOL)

ran Seafoam through the engine and not only did I NOT see any smoke coming from a leaky manifold, I saw very little smoke anywhere. Don't know what the deal is. Anyway, I've decided to put the Tbird on hold and get the Explorer noises fixed first before they drive me nuts. Its got a leaky AC system as well but thats a different thread. :)

Got the same darn tick and is driving me nuts.

5.0L Tick

Any solutions to your "Tick" sound? I have the same problem, can't tell for sure if it's from the EM (Exh manifold). I took a good look (enginge running) while I was changing the upper and lower Ball Joints. While checking the tightness of the one EM stud at the front port, It broke off. Believe me, I didn't put any great torque on it. Also of note, there's only two studs... the rest are bolt heads. Does that mean the EM has already had work done on it?

thanks,

Weird, my wife and I just drove through Clinton on Monday. :D

The bolt you broke caused me to put a 347 in my first Mounty.

You most likely need just an EGR tube. The later cast headers don't crack as often. The gasket might also be burned out.
When you take the manifold off, you should be able to weld a nut onto the broken bolt and then back it out. The heat from welding it, and then allowing to cool will help break it free. Use flux core wire, with the gas shield removed from the welder tip. This will allow you to get the tip down in there better.

I suggest not messing with it at all until you can use this method. You don't want to mess up the end sticking out.

5.0L Tick

Jon, thanks for the info. I have a Hobart Mig, so I'll try welding a nut as you suggest. Since I have to take the EM off, I'm going to replace it even if it's not cracked, along with new bolts, although @ $14 each, takes my breath away. I love this Explorer, so I'll suck it up. Any other tips on ticks is greatly appreciated. Just saved $520 on doing the ball joints myself, so $112 for bolts goes down a little better. The EM is around $60.
