Im having the same tick under load in my explorer and cant figure out the problem worth a crap!
New headers, new EGR valve, new EGR tube, all new exhaust no leaks, cats are not blown

Im going to try retorquing the bolts on the manifolds next

eltric poblem on side mirrio wont work change swith

power mirrors woont work and fuse and swich is good

I also have this "ticking". I have a noticeably louder ticking when the motor is cold and once warmed up it goes away. Under acceleration i still have a ticking so im guessing it could be this egr hose deal or the exhaust manifold?

most likely the egr tube.
since metal expands when warm, it's basically "sealing" the crack.

I've had this ticking on my Explorer since I bought it almost 100k miles ago (8'ish yrs or so I think?)

Thanks. Yeah i can live with it but it would also be nice if it wasnt there too. So i see the egr tube connects to the manifold but where does the other end go to?

to the EGR valve :p:
not sure where exactly it's located tho... never looked. I think somewhere around the back of the block though? Atleast that's where it looks like the hose goes.

Not necessarily. The 5.0 is plagued with this issue and I've read many a post about it. It's been an annoyance to me since I got my truck. That being said, I had Torque Monster Headers installed last summer with new gaskets and a brand new custom EGR tube (to accommodate an Upper Intake Spacer). I've Seafoamed it many times, have new plugs, wires, DPFE, IAC and MAF. It still has the same "tick, tick, tick" sound that plagued it before I had all this done (very similar to what you describe). The only thing I didn't change and probably should have is the EGR valve itself. It's a ***** to get at, but we had the whole engine ripped apart doing the other work that it would have been ideal to swap it as well. I know of someone else who swapped this part and the pingy sound went away.... for a while.

I hear others mention a "lifter" issue. I'm not that strong technically to know what all that means, but it seems to be a common theory as to why the 5.0 has this issue. I've also read that it's an annoyance first and a performance issue second. I read that "Lucas Oil Stabilizer" might solve the problem, but it did nothing for me when I tried it (except lightening my wallet).

I was having big time driveability issues after we did the headers that I thought was related to this same issue because I still heard the sound. It was worse after the headers were installed and I had some serious performance issues (chugging, non-responsiveness) as well. Turned out to be a leaky gasket connecting two pieces of the driver's side header and once replaced, my truck ran like a top. The pingy sound remained. My truck is running awesome these days, so it's an annoyance I'm reluctantly accepting. I don't notice it when the music is on anyhow. :D

Its probably something im just going to live with. It doesnt seem to affect performance and when at idle you cant even hear it unless the engine is stone cold. Once warmed up the ticking at idle goes away. From then on i can only hear it upon acceleration. My particular "tick" doesnt sound like the kind of tick you get from a noisy valve train. It sounds more exhaust related.

this is exactly what mine does, too. And it's definitely coming from the EGR tube area. Although sometimes the tick doesn't go away even when warm, but other times the tick isn't barely audible when the engine is still cold. And the repetition increases under acceleration.

lifter tapping does have a pretty different sound to it, and of course would be louder at the valve covers and could be determined with the use of a mechanic's stethescope.

You mentioned that yours is worse at startup and goes away when warmed up, can only hear it on acceleration etc etc.

DITTO for me.

I've got the best manifolds you can have for the 5.0 with new gaskets that are showing no signs of leaks. I can't find an exhaust leak anywhere else. I have custom pipes and an aftermarket muffler from the cats back, installed 4 years ago when I got the truck. I even have a set of Percy's gaskets sitting in my parts pile in the garage ready to be installed if need be. My muffler guy said that isn't necessary given the gaskets I have in there are tight and show no signs of leaking.

Just saying that not everything can be explained by an exhaust leak despite the fact the 5.0 is notorious for exhaust leaks.

You could be right and maybe its not something that has anything to do with my exhaust. Theres only two things i can think of that would make this sound though. 1-noisy lifter/valve 2-exhaust leak/issue
Im going to go out on a limb and say that in my personal paticular case, its not a valve train issue. Ive heard noisy lifters and valve ticks and this just doesnt match. In your situation who knows what the cause is. It sounds like you've eliminated the exhaust part except the egr valve itself. Im about 99% sure all of my exhaust system is the original from the factory. At 147,000 miles it wouldnt surprise me if i have a leak somewhere. Anyway, good luck tracking yours down but i say if you can live with it then live with it. Unless my car starts running like an old lady then i plan on letting it be.

I'm pretty much done trying to rid myself of the noise. Sounds like in your case it very well could be exhaust related. I'm just stoked that I can enjoy my headers. Jon, Eric and others who "helped" with my header install (i.e. they did all the work and I pretty much watched and learned) did such a great job and it was frustrating to have the truck run so poorly afterwards. All it took was replacing a small gasket and an hour's labour at a trusted shop to make it right, but it took me 5-6 months to sort that out. The truck performs great and that's all that matters anymore. :)

help?

i am having this ticking as well on my 98 explorer eddie bauer do i have this hose it's the 4l v6?
thanks

Ford Explorer Eddie Bower V8, 5.0L, 2001.
I have a ticking noise too in the right side (driving direction) and some iddle hesitations. Sounds to me more like a vacuum/exhaust ticking, not a lifter sound. I hope it is not a cracked manifold like I have read above. Has anybody an ideea where the EGR valve is located on a 5L engine? I want to try to replace it. Pictures would help...

Do you guys have a DIY on how to do this? There is not much space in there to unscrew the nut on either side of the EGR hose.

I fixed my ticking today. First off, the plugs in the passenger side of the truck hadn't been changed with the passenger side. The electrode was 75% gone and the gap on them all was in the 80s, yikes. Then while I was down there I checked out the bolts on the exhaust manifold to see how the daily PB Blaster was doing, and noticed the front bolt was really lose. The front stud also looks like it could be tightened since I can see the washer underneath it spin when the engine runs. In any case i'm sure I had spark knock AND an exhaust tick... and I got them both fixed without having to snap off those ####ing manifold bolts :)

Now I need to get rid of this manifold and egr tube...

The bottom bolt you can use a socket on if you cut the tube. The back one... I pretty much planned on taking the upper intake off.

Hey there all!

So; I've spent hours reading the posts RE:EGR/cracked EM pass side, and after trying a gasket replacement (in-situ)...still had the tik-tik-tik of the leak-leak-leak...

So; ordered a Dorman replacement manifold, meticulously disassembled, cleaned surfaces, reassembled and torqued. No broken studs or bolts. Went so smoothly I thought to myself "why do I pay the shop $85/hr for this stuff?"

Install new Autozone made-in-USA plug wires while I was at it (has relatively new dealer installed plugs).

Started her up and..............

Chug-chug-chug-chug :-/

Ohhhh-kay.....:

Firing order? Check
Loose Vac hoses? Naddah; Check
All plug wire caps tight and securely in place? Check
Disconnect battery for an hour? (this resets the Chip, right?) Check
Everything tight? Check

Check, re-check, re-re-check....

Leaking factory EGR tube? Aha! Cracked!!!

Order new one from Autozone (Dorman)

Arrives next morning...
Two days and nights later, after several skin grafts and blood transfusions (Still fighting the infected wounds) and devising my OWN damn super-humongous-lever-arm tool to remove the now legendary EGR tube retainer nuts (yes, there was a Sawzall involved as well...), I have the new one in place. No leaks!!! Excellent!!

Then....????? Drum-roll please..................

Chug-a-chug-a-chug-a-chug...wow I REALLY fixed it....grrrrrrr >:-!

Same checklist,

Hours reading this forum....

I don't get it??? It was running like a champ when this adventure started? How does replacing an EM and EGR tube (by the book; remove front wheel, fender-well liner and every thing in the way...careful as not to incur collateral damage), Screw the engine so badly???

HELP!!!!
