1997 4.0 into a 1999 with a 4.0 both vin X

I have a 1999 Explorer with a 4.0 that needs replaced. I was told that the only compatible years are 1998-2000. Can anyone tell me what would need to be done to install an engine from a 1997? Both vehicles are complete and both have an X for the 8th digit in the VIN.

Nope. the vin "x" is the OHV 4.0. Those were used in explorers from the beginning through 01.. Now, as far as all the different variants, i think any 95-01's should work for you.

I dont see why not. They are both OHV engines. Just be sure to use all the 99 wiring, sensors.
