1997 5.0 died while driving, won't start back up

Strange one for sure, been a Ford technician for 34 years and I've never seen that on an Explorer. There was an issue with the V6 engines in escapes and edges a few years back where the coils would burn up (coil on plug) and it was caused by bad PCM's, talk about a bad smell!!

@1sicbronconut Could the coil driver in the PCM somehow be overpowering the coil? I'm trying to visualize the schematic. The pathway. Are coil circuits ground switched like Ford door light switches?

Correct ground switched by the PCM, no idea on the root cause though.

The coils were firing even after they split. You could see them arcing to the coil bracket, then the main PCM fuse #19 would blow. All the bracket ground points, bracket to engine block, coils to bracket were freshly cleaned.

I seem to remember something about the PCM's staying on and overheating the coils, but these were COP's not coil packs.
