Been looking around local parts stores to find a rebuild kit for my alternator, seems that everyone wants me to buy their rebuilt alternators for $150 +, now I know how to rebuild one for less than 1/2 that, but finding them is a *****! anyone with any ideas? Know where I can get a kit?? HELP!!!

I've never seen a "kit" to rebuild an alternater. You should be able to purchase individual parts-the brushes, regulator, bearings, but usually the slip rings on the rotor will have grooves in them from the brushes. The field coil would need to be checked for shorts or open in the windings. By the time you do all the needed checks, the new or rebuilt may be the cheaper option.

A local shop here charges about $25 for parts to rebuild one, not counting hard parts wearing out. I had them check one and rebuild another. The checked unit was $15 and the rebuilt Explorer unit(aftermarket 170 amp) cost me $50 total.

Look around some more, there are shops out there who don't over charge.

It will probably help you to know that you have the 4G alternator (130 Amp I believe). Search for parts and diagrams for that to get better results. Here are two links I found while looking for 4G alternator information.

Link 1 (early version of it apparently)

Link 2 (post at the bottom of the page titled, "Rebuilding Ford 4G Alternators")

what shops where you live supply the parts? any way I can reach them to order the parts?

Try these folks in Houston...

Alamo Rebuilders
(713) 464-6874
8537 Long Point Rd, Houston, TX 77055

Finch Alternator & Starter
(713) 692-0507
4440 N Shepherd Dr, Houston, TX 77018

Both are rebuilders I have used in the past...And Tomball isn't too far from Houston...There are other shops in Houston but I can't find their addresses or phone numbers...
