1997 explorer trans code 1744

In 2001 they did away with the OSS and replaced it with a different sensor, the ISS. That is the only thing I am aware of. WHERE was the sensor you did away with? I am only aware of 2 on the pre 2001 5R55E's.... the TSS, inside, and the OSS, near the rear of the case. IT NEEDS BOTH. NO OSS would fool the PCM into thinking the TCC was bad! I am going to guess this is the source of your problem.... until I learn otherwise.

Ok I read glfrederick's post. Interesting. The earliest 5R55E's had 3! I stand corrected. Either way, you might try reconnecting that and see if your problem goes away. Well, I guess I should ask again....How long ago did you do this? I mean has it been months acting ok? How is your case connector? pins clean?

Somehow I am suspicious of the TSS and OSS singals to the puter. Sorry I am not more help.

i tried reconecting and i cleaned the pins (i didnt cut the wires only jumpted them toghter with a connector)and still the same any way to check the tss and oss with volts or ohms

my exp was driving fine for 8 months with check eng light on just couldn't get it inspected got a $250.00 fine so i have to get it fixedbeen working on it for about 2 weeks now

Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid

l The torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid is used by the powertrain control module (PCM) to apply and release the torque converter clutch.

l The PCM sends the TCC solenoid pulse-width modulated signals to smoothly engage the torque converter clutch.

Symptoms:

l Failed on — engine runs rough/vehicle shudder, engine stalls in Drive at low idle speeds (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear).

l Failed off — No TCC engagement, poor fuel economy.

DTCs: P0741**, P0743*, P1740, P1744**

* Output circuit check generated only by an electrical concern.

** May also be generated by a non-electrical transmission hardware condition.
 






This piqued my curiosity a bit, so I searched for 5r55e torque converter p1744 on the net and a place sktransparts talks about using either tcc rpm or tccamact to monitor torque coverter slip on your scanner. It appears to me that the engine rpm is compared to the torque converter rpm when locked to determine torque converter slip. New to me!

Pretty slick idea. Since you have had this problem on two transmissions, it seems that there is a circuit that reports torque converter rpm back to the PCM from the tranny so it can do the calculation. I would guess that the problem would be on that circuit, and I don't have the technical stuff to figure that out.

Maybe Glacier can check this and see if my thinking is anywhere near the mark, or whether I should stick to tying my shoes.

hi my name is nev i,m trying to get the auto tramission of torkconverter undun and marked and all bellhouseing bolts undun ecept the top two bolts finding it very hard to get to. is therea specific tool to use . as i am taking the motor out to change the timing chains. any imformation on this proceedja whould be great.
 






code 1744 fixed, you will not believe this but both transmissions were bad, with the same code! I went to a shop that had a snap on scan tool that would activate the tcc and do the proper diagnosis, and he said that it was internal transmission, specifically torque converter slip. I got a third transmission, replaced the front pump seal, and a o-ring seal that goes between the front shaft and torque converter, the new o-ring seal was different in design than the original, I was told that this o-ring seal was the culprit, allowing the torque converter to lose pressure, approximately 500 miles now andno problems, Thanks for all of your help, this was a strange one!
