It was an intermittent problem for about 6 months; sometimes the lights would go on for a day or so, now nothing. Radio, cassette, CD all work fine, just no lights in any mode. I saw one post about an $80 resistor replacement, is that the fix? Does it have to be taken into the shop? The dealer or a good car stereo shop?

Thanks.

it could be a loose wire in the back. Any other electrical problems? I'm sure there are plenty of people on the board w/ their old radio they could sell you on the cheap...

No other electrical problems. How do I take the audio out to check for a loose wire? You think it might be an internal loose wire (inside the box)? Given that the radio, etc. all works fine, I really didn't think it was something loose between fuse box and the audio unit.

Welcome to the boards!! STock around, you'll be learning a lot about your truck.

To your problem. It's a very common problem on Explorers. Try to do a search on radio displays. There're a lot of threads about this subject. Good luck!!!

I had the same exact problem as you. Every light went out and nothing limunated. It all worked fine though, just no lights. I wished that I had the solution for a quck fix, but my 98 is under the extended service plan, Ford ESP. They gave me a new HU, 6 disk changer, and a new sub. Taking it all out now and installing all Alpine in it. You can get one from the local junk yards for about 125 bucks.

Dogs...I was told by the dealer that a non Ford audio will not work because of the steering wheel buttons. Will the Alpine be hooked up to your steering wheel?

How do you get the old audio out? Front or underneath?

I took the radio completely out. Had a freind do some magic with fiberglass and molded the trim and it holds both the Alpine CD radio and a DVD player to boot. Also I inquired here about some electrical wires for the harness and it will make the buttons on the steering wheel still work on the Alpine deck. I don't know why they said it wouldn't work for you unless they are talking about just a straight install. Anything can be done with the imagination.
Will have pics done after the install is complete.

if you look at it, there are four holes... you need to stick something in those to release it.. I'll search for a link, I know there has been a post or two about this
