Greetings All!

Ok, just hoping to get some feedback on some tranny issues.

Current problem: No reverse, rough slipping when accelerating over 2500rpm.

Background: Flare started about 18 months ago. It appeared like 3-4 flare as opposed to a 2-3. A month ago, slipping started when accelerating.
It would sound really rough, like a scraping sound, whenever going over 2500rpm. Only in 1st and 2nd though.

Changed VB with one from eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories), did this last night.

Found metal pieces in the pan and on top of the VB as per images below:

Changed VB, replaced filter, refilled with 6 litres of Mercon V equivalent and 1 litre of Lucas ATF.
Started Explorer and went for a spin. Was still slipping heavily but better than before VB change. Check oil level and cross-hatched area was full. Delay between R and D was about 10 seconds with some very wierd noises and clunks. Changing to D made a spinning top sound, hard to explain.

Got up this morning and went for a spin since I read somewhere here that since the computer was reset, it'll have to relearn the pressures etc.
Well it actually go a lot better with only slight slipping at 2500rpm but now with the 2-3 flare.

Anyway got home and found that reverse was no longet there. No noise or any indication that R is engaged when changing gears but now less delay and less of a thump going from N to D.

I'll check the linkages but I didn't touch them and the reverse light comes on in R.

I know that my transmission is rooted but I just want it to last a few more weeks while I sort out what I can do, money being the main restricting factor.

There is a local scrapyard that has a '98 with gearbox, so I am thinking of grabbing that, how hard is it swap gearboxes, they should both be 5R55E's. I don't really have access to a workshop just my garage and some limited tools, although I did buy an inch/lb torque wrench.

Question: After that long rant, my questions are:
1. How hard to swap a similar transmission for one person?
2. Should I do anything with the other used transmission or just leave it and hope for the best.
or...
3. Based on the pictures above, what sort of repair/parts am I looking at and could I do that myself?

edit:
Vehicle info:
1998 Explorer with 4.0L SOHC(?) and 5R55E(of course).

When I changed the VB, it came tested and ready to go in so I didn't remove the 2 top gaskets and check.
I re-used the filter o-rings and did not replace the reverse/low solenoid o-rings (I didn't have any to replace with and they looked like they were in good condition.
/edit

Thanks in advance.

I figured as much, luckily there is a '98 Explorer at the local yard.

How hard is the actual swap? Apart from physical size of the gearboxes, do I need any special tools?

Thanks

The wreckers wanted too much for the gearbox.
So, based on the broken bits found in the pan, would it be worth my while buying a kit similar to this on eBay,
http://http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Transmission-Parts-Rebuild-Kit-Ford-4R44E-5R55E-97-on_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a1Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem120413034109QQitemZ120413034109QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories, and a manual and trying to fix the tranny myself.

I mean do any of you guys think it might just be the bands or clutches (soft rebuild?).
I just can't justify $1500AUD for a used gearbox or $3000AUD for a soft rebuild and since the thing is stuffed anyway I couldn't do a worse job I suppose.
It's either that or wait for a cheap gearbox to go on eBay.

Cheers

You may not even have a viable core from the looks of that. Man...that's bad. You have at least one bearing that's come apart and who knows what else has worn to cause all that mess. You are in need of a new trans. You can disassemble the one you have and see what it needs...if you know what to look for...but my guess is that thing is toast and can't be rebuilt without a ton of money in hard parts.

Thanks Cobraguy

I didn't know the extent of the damage but now I know it's better to look for another gearbox than try and fix this one.

I've been scouring parts diagrams trying to locate where these pieces may have come from, they look like bearing parts.

Cheers
