Hello everyone,
My wife drove her 1998 Explorer to S.C. because our daughter is about to have a baby. Well she gets down there and she said she stopped for gas and put it in rev and heard a loud bang and now no reverse. So now she's 600 miles away and I'm trying to figure out what happened.
From what I've found out it has the 5R55E in it. All other gears work fine. She has been having problems with it not going into park all the way.
It has the 4.0L SOHC and 145,000 miles. Not sure if it turned on the light because the check engine light has been on due to a code about a vacuum leak.
I searched these forums for any info and only found one with the same problem and no answer to it yet. My son-in laws friend is going to school for automatic trans and said he will take it to class for a diagnosis.
From what I've found out, there are issues with these and would like to know if it's worth fixing and how extensive of a repair. One last thing, as long as the other gears are working would it be safe for her to try and drive it back to Ohio?
If all else fails, anyone know someone looking for an Explorer around Sumter S.C.? LOL
