Really basic question here - which transmission do I have in my '98 Explorer XLT with the 4.0L SOHC engine? I've searched and found some great stuff on the differences between the 4R and 5R trannies... but not which one I have.

Also - service. I've found stickies referring to a "complete change," that I assume means a flush rather than drain and replace. Is that right? I'm the original owner, and I thought I was told at sale that this thing didn't need its trans fluid changed. Did I just remember that wrong?
Thanks.

you have a 5R55E tranny.......

unless you find a bunch of gunk in the pan, I don't go the "complete/flush route" . think about it this way, do you flush out your engine at every filter change ?

JMHO, but I've been wrong before. :salute:

The majority of your fluid remains in the trans with just a drain and refill. I always flush but many others just drain and refill as mentioned above. You may have been told not to change fluid by the dealer. Don't you believe them. Do it and do it often!
