I have a '99 Explorer 4X4 that I need to understand a little better. The Chilton book I have shows the front axle as having a vacuum operated disconnect system. My axle does not have the vacuum system that is pictured in the book . With the Explorer on stands, the front wheels are engaged to the drive line so my question is how are the wheels disengaged. Are there some type of hubs either automatic or vacuum operated? I need to understand how the front drive system works.

You dont have a vacuum disconnect. 95 + 96 had that. The '99 is a live axle, its always spinning while you drive. The only disconnect you have is the transfer case.

Snoranger - Thanks for the reply. Is there any aftermarket hubs that I can install. With gas the way it is, the payback might not take to long.
