96 X Sport 4x4 how does it work?

I was trying to experiment with that in the past it seems as if in 2wd the auto 4wd mode is still active which I'm thinking Ford did on purpose and is the reason for the CAD is so that 4wd wasn't always active.

but wouldn't that cause premature wear on both the TC, front shaft AND the front differential? also the gas mileage would be affected.

anyway, assuming that the frond shaft is supposed to spin all the time, the problem now would be that we're getting excessive noise and vibration coming from the general front shaft/differential area. Are there some bearings in there that we should consider changing?

weird how a part time electric shift TC would get purposely wired up to be perpetually engaged

Well that's how the 97+ Explorers operate is they're always engaging and that there is no true 2wd mode unless the bwm is done. And yes there are bearings in the front diff that sometimes go bad.

..(otherwise the front tires would have pulled the explorer off the stands

...thru the garage wall and into the back garden I'll bet.

Mine is giving me grief too. It switches on and I can feel it engaging and then after a bit it the two 4wd dash lights flash. I need to put it up on jacks and do the test as Described in a previous thread

the brown wire mod...I'm gonna look seriously into that. I'll see what my brother thinks about that (he is technically the X's owner, that lucky SOB) thanks for the input x92

SA, if you're getting some flashing 4dw lights, the selector disk on the TC motor might be misaligned or a bit loose. of course, it might be something else, troubleshoot it until you're absolutely sure.

here's a nifty little link: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123542&

It's possible that there's a lose connection at the transfer case too if your 4wd lights are flashing. And the brown-wire-mod is definitely nice to have I love having it.

Thanks for the link Trey. Excellent as are All the posts I have read on how to I may add. It like having your own personal Haynes manual on hand.

And glen4x4 I will definitely be doing the "brown wire in my car" la lala la la! Sorry! A bit of South African Boney M humour.

I will do the BWM when I overhaul the TC and related goodies.
