Just lost reverse

Okay... Whoa.

Back up a bit..
A few questions remain:

Is the rear planetary gear and the band the same thing?

If the band is broken, would I still have a manual first gear?

To rebuild.. does this imply removing just the case or the entire tranny from the truck?

How can I see the broken band, or confirm this is the falure before a rebuild?

Thnx

Okay...
I looking thru the servo hole, I see a gray not smooth metallic part/thing up there with a slight groove across it... what is that? Is that a broken band?

Expected to see something shiney smooth like a cam shaft that covered the most the hold. This gray part is about .25 to .5 inches above the hole.

accepting all comments and questions.

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so here is a link, and a picture for the low/reverse band: http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/C3_A4LD_4R44E_reverse_band_1976_on_p/230-000023999.htm

This band controls both low, and reverse gear as its name implies.

if you can touch and move that part with no effort i'd say a band broke, requiring transmission removal and rebuild. the drum is what the band grips, it holds the drum allowing the gears within it to operate at a different ratio, or in reverse as the case is in your X.

as far as the glitter, that is likely normal wear from the bands and clutches. i see it all my filter changes, but not on the dipstick, (thats why the external filter is AWESOME!), in fact the magnet in your pan likely looks "slimey" as it is totaly covered in tiny metal shreds saturated in fluid. once you clean it and see the magnet is actual half the size it first looks you'll be paranoid forever.

Okay.. excellent comments/pic thanks.

What I see is to the bottom left of the pic.
To the left of the gap in the band, that part of it anyway, see the groove.
It does have some spring to it via the phillps test.
I try moving it around.

On the magnets... soft slimey dark gray and very symetrical, three rows.
Figured that was how it was designed. That is scary... if it is just normal build up.

So I need solid proof this is the failure.
Is the rear band and rear planetary gear the same thing?

The rebuild kits appear to have seals, gaskets, etc but not bands and gears.
What do I need to purchase exactly or is still to early to tell?

Thnx and this forum rocks...

OKay called in a transmission expert to locate the failure.
He definely says it is the Rear Band as the servo bottoms out in the bore.
I have my doubts... as he also said he could not see band thru the hole.

If I bring in the tran to him for a bench rebuild, $600-$700 bucks.
What do you all think?
How long should it take to drop the transmission?

Is he going to just replace the rear band, and some seals or will he do an entire rebuild with new servo pistons, valve body, solenoids, gaskets, filters, bands, clutch pack, plates, and any hard parts which look questionable? I would say for the price he is charging that he might replace the seals, clutch packs, gaskets, filters, plates, bands, and possibly other parts but not an entire rebuild.

Today we remove the transsmission, any help in the removal department is appreciated.

Is there a removal guide/instructions on this site?
How much ground clearance will i need to remove it?

I'll bring the trans, master rebuild kit, and reverse band, for a bench rebuild.

My reverse gear went out last night - shifted into reverse and went 1-2 feet, then CLUNK and no more reverse. Luckily I just moved into the city, so parking is pretty much ALL parallel :banghead:

I'm hoping I don't need a full transmission rebuild but that seems to be what others' similar problems are pointing to...
