- 1999 Explorer Sport
I own a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0L V6 SOHC. After a lot of debating and research with my father, we have decided this is the route we want to go.
We're looking get prerunner style fenders in the front and back to drastically increase the wheel-well size to fit 33 inch tires. On top of that, we understand we will need wheel spacers to make sure the handling doesn't get messed with and to be sure the wheels seriously fit on my truck without anything rubbing or whatnot. Also understand we'll need new axles to one withstand the off-road beating, but to also withstand the stress from the wheel spacers. Also looking to completely replace the suspension to stronger parts to handle the off-road beating. Not looking to lift the car, not necessary and just too expensive and difficult for my Explorer. Knowing the larger 33 inch tires will provide a decent addition to my ground clearance, i think I'll be fine without a lift. Not looking to rock climb or anything, mainly just looking to mud bog, and probably dune riding. Seems the only point to a lift is for ground clearance, and like i mentioned i don't plan to climb over anything, so the clearance isn't necessary. I feel the added clearance from the larger tires will be more than enough to compensate for bogging and dunning!
So obviously I've put a lot of thought into this project, and know what i want to do, the only issue is, i have no clue where to look for these parts! From what I'm reading on this message board, not a single part is made for Explorers that allows for this stuff. Just seems like everybody is piecing stuff together from jeeps and whatnot that fit the Explorer, so obviously this sort of put an end to my project seeing as i haven't a clue where to find these parts or what to look for!
If anybody has any suggestions for me that would be fantastic, i can handle the tires and whatnot, i guess I'd just like some assistance in figuring out what size spacers i need to make sure 33 inch tires don't rub when I'm turning with the normal suspension and no lift? Where do i go to get a stronger axle that can take a beating, looks like it'll be from a jeep but i don't know how to even tell which one would fit since its not made for my truck hahah. Is there even a suspension kit that is off-road grade for explorers? No lift needed like i mentioned, same stuff as the factory setup, just needs to withstand a beating. From searching it doesn't look like there is anything like that Explorer specific
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much if you've bothered to get this far!
