Hey all,

I picked up a 1999 Ford Explorer XLS with the 4.0 SOHC, for $250.00 cash. The thing is mint inside, still has a new car smell, so I had to have it. I was also surprised to find that nothing has ever sat in the cargo area, and that under the cargo area mat, are the factory "Explorer" logo floor mats. AC is cold too.

However, it was advertised as having a cracked head, I'm thinking they are full of it, as it misfires horribly, and there are metal shavings in the oil ( no water though ).

It will run and drive, but it runs very rough, when you go to turn the wheel, it struggles, and skips as well.

I'm already assuming that I will have to end up putting a motor in this thing, but I want some input from some of you first. I've only ever owned two 1997 Mountaineers with the 5.0 V8.

Thanks.

Go to the wrecker and find the newest 4.0l SOHC from a Mustang, Land Rover, ranger, sport trac, or explorer with the lowest mileage and drop it in. With a little luck you could probably walk away with a 1000 into the thing and have a decent car if you do the work yourself.

Yeah, I'm capable of doing it all myself. Would one of those just be drop in, or do I need to do anything special to it? Because I was reading yesterday, that I can only use the block itself, and would have to transfer everything else.

Just gotta pull all the sensors, intake, exhaust manifolds, engine mounts and a couple other odds and ends, off your old engine and swap em. Wouldn't hurt to pull the valve covers and check the timing chains on whatever you buy before any money changes hands.
