Ok, before get yelled at for not searching, every thread I've found where this question is asked gets sidetracked before the question is answered.

Question: Is the electric shift 1354 used in the 1st generation explorer the same as the electric shift 1354 found in the 2nd generation? The reason I ask is I'm getting a 96 sport with a blown transfer case, and I am not certain yet, but I believe it is a 1354 part time. If it is the 4405 I know all about the GEM swap and such. Also, if the 1354's are not the same, what is the difference, and can the 1st gen be modified?

Thanks.

there was never a 1354 in a 2nd gen. Its a 4404 or something like that..

I just checked ebay, and there are a half a dozen or more 1354's listed as fitting 2nd gens. I know they used that case for a long time. I think the 4404 is different, but I dont know all that much about the different e-shift cases. I know all the advantages of a manual shift, did that in my '91, but this is a simple get it back on the road build, and I have 2 1st gen e-shift 1354s.

Its not the BW-4404 -- thats the AWD case behind the V8 engines.
The 2nd gens never recieved a manual transfer case - only the first gens.

Yeah, i know they never came with them, I'm wanting to know if the e-shift 1st gen case(s) I have laying around could replace the e-shift in the 96 I'm buying without modification, and if modification is required, what needs to be done?

Must be the 4406 that is the 2nd gen electric shift tcase then..

AH sorry I misread your orignal question.

But the electronic transfer cases from the two generations (4405 for the 2nd gen; 1354 from the 1st gen) arent electronically compatible.

4405 then! final answer!

what about 96 shift motor on a 1st gen case? Would that work?

lol, yeah, ive been reading about t cases for about 3 hours now. Thats the control trac, automatic case used on the 2nd gen.

Yea thats all you can get, no 1354. And putting in a 1354 GEM would be a PITA to get it working with the rest of the truck.

Also of note is that there are sensors in the tcase that may be different between the 1354 electric (probably no sensors, actually) and the 4405 which has two different speed sensors on it, i do believe.

Why not try to find a 1354 manual? Bolt it right up, worry about the linkage later once the truck is on the road..

well, because I would rather use one of the 2 transfer cases I already have. Save a couple hundred. Getting the truck for 550, would hate to spend half that fixing it.

So put in the electric shift 1354, and remove the motor so you can shift it by hand if you need to (just use a screwdriver)

Kind of a pain but at least the truck is on the road...

Then start the hunt for a manual 1354 with linkage ;)

No way you'll get the shift motor to play nice with the 2nd gen.

You'll also want to pull the cluster and remove the light bulbs for teh 4x4 hi and low indicator lights, they'll start blinking when the GEM isnt getting the signals it should from the transfercase.

I dont think it'll work because the whole system isnt just the shift motor. The 2nd gen's computer reads sensors on the t-case.

yeah thought about that, but I coulda sworn I've seen 2nd gens with only 2hi 4hi and 4lo. If not 4405, since no auto feature, what case? Matter of fact I know I have seen that, now that I think about it. What case would that be? I'm pretty sure I have seen pics of other's 2nd gen trucks on here with a 1354 e-shift in it.

ok, that makes sense. Hmm. Well, we'll see what happens when I get the truck, will be at my house tomorrow, so I'll know more. (This all may be in vain, since it could have the 4405 in it)

Thats correct, the early second gens did have that option - as stated in GIGOECAM's diagnosis thread (2wd, 4auto, 4low): http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203441

I've never torn apart a 4405 from the years above. However, after working on two 4405s from later years (one from a 97 and another from a 98), my assumption is that the transfer cases between the 95/96 and the later years probably operate exactly the same mechanically as far as 4WD and HI/LO gear engagement is concerned. I think the only difference is the computer's logic settings based on the in-dash knob selector. I think the "2wd" mode in the early second gen is pretty much telling the ECU to not do anything at all. I believe Ford realized this is probably useless since the Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) was removed (meaning the front driveshaft is rotating all the time), and an 4WD all-time hi-gear mode would probably make more sense than a 4WD hi-gear automatic mode ("4Auto"). Therefore, I think they replaced the "2Hi" mode with "Auto" and then introduced the "4HI" as the all-time hi-gear/ratio mode.

THAT is the thread I was looking for to begin with. Hmm. Well, all else fails, I'll find a junkyard case, since I can get them for 75 bucks, if I can find one. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it, I didn't realize there were different versions of the same case that functioned differently in their shift patterns. Looks like its going to be a 2wd 1354 for now, unless the problem is electrical with the existing t-case. (All I know is that it's not working as should, and their mechanic said the case was messed up, so I'll have to take a look and see what happens) Besides, maybe I can come up with a creative solution to the problem.

The 1354 manual swap is nothing new to me, I did one in my 91, along with manual hubs. I can get manual 1350s for 75 all day long too, that might be something to look into, since the front slip is not an issue on an IFS truck.

Got the truck today, its a 4405. For now, I think I'm going to do as inh suggested and stick my electric 1354 in there and set it to 2wd and forget it. Thanks again for yall's help.
