i know, ive seen that. but i was hoping for something that broke down the options for each kind, like xl, xlt, xlt eddie bauer, etc.

I bought my 91 xl used and the only option it had was 4x4. It had cheap vinyl seats that were rough. It didn't have power windows, seats, door locks, no rear wiper, roof rack, or rear defroster and cheap ass steel wheels. I guess the 3.73 ls might have been an option.

It did have pinstripes.

You may have to try buying an original sales brochure off of Ebay. I got one for my '97 for the same reason.

From the info I have:
91-93 had only rear wheel ABS, & no EGR
94 had 4 wheel abs
94 had EGR
Center consoles were various between years. Most 91-93 have a big console with 2 big cup holders left & right the 94 had a smaller one with the cup holders up & down.
Other then that they were all the same.
XL as described was a stripped down version
XLT was basic options. Power windows/locks everything the XL didn't have. Options were leather, 5 speed or auto, tow package(3.73 LS), sunroof, running boards.
Eddie Bauer was a fully loaded XLT that included leather not sure on the standard options other then the XLT options & leather. Could only get the auto.
Limited had everything. Info center, CD player, special outside trim, & auto only.

EGR was added mid-way thru the 93 model year.
I thought 93-94 had 4-wheel ABS. I'll have to check my friends 93 XLT but I believe he's got 4-wheel ABS. 91-92 are definitely rear-wheel ABS only.

Limited 94 only. Had a different grill and more gizmos.
Sport 91-94
XLT 91-94
XL 91-94

Gear ratios: 3.08 (2WD only?), 3.27, 3.55 (2WD models only for sure), 3.73. I think 4.10 was offered as a special order.

Wheel types: There is a nice thread on that here somewhere. Search for it.
Basically, there are 4 or 5 types of wheels. Most common are: Throwing Star 91-94. Deer Print 93-94. Hole 91-94. Plain Steel 91-94.

Hmm what else. Can't think of anything else offhand that Jason hasn't said...

My '93 XLT has 4wheel ABS(really 2 front sensors and a rear axle sensor), 3.73 open, cloth interior, 2 side by side cupholders and no EGR. My dads '94 Limited with the tow package did not have a receiver and has a 3.73 open. Otherwise he has just about every other option available.

How do you get a tow package without everything the tow package comes with? The point of the tow package is the frame mounted Hitch, the higher (numerically) Gear ratio with a LSD, and the trans cooler to prolong the life of the trany that will be seeing higher stress levels.

i'll throw you guys a monkeywrench...

i have a 94 sport 4x4, with 4 wheel abs, 3.27 open gears, deerprint wheels, 2 side by side cup holders (without the coin holder slide-top).

Don't know how, but he bought it off the original owner. They made no modifications to it. He has the original window sticker listing all the items, but none were on it except the tranny cooler. The door code shows the 3.73 open rear diff. Guess someone at the dealer goofed when adding the hitch. It does however have an extra rear leaf that is original equipment as well. It's an odd one.

Actually, you could special order an EB with a manual transmission. I know, I got one. ;)

Go to www.consumerguide.com click on automotive then used cars, ford, then explorer. They show the year to year changes. I have heard of other changes but they could be middle of year changes.

Why is that a monkeywrench? Those are all standard options on a 94.
In fact, that's exactly like my truck...3.27 gears and all...

I've seen too many 1st gen trucks that did not have the frame hitch but sticker said they were towing pkg. All they had was a ball, pigtail, and tranny cooler. Frame hitches are expensive for a carmaker to put on 1000's of models....

Hmmm thats a very odd way to lable that package imo. I would call the tow package the truck with all those options and the frame mounted hitch, and the trucks w/o the hitch like a Heavy duty package or something.

alright perhaps it wasn't a monkeywrench, but it contradicted what some of the boys were saying about available option combos earlier in the thread. I also have "towing pkg.", a tranny cooler and a ball, but no pigtail, or evidence of one.

Well, Ford did some odd things, esp. back then. If it has a ball hitch, it could still tow....So technically they could call that a tow package if they wanted...and I think that's what Ford did. All the 1st gen tow pkg trucks I've ever seen came with a simple ball hitch.

I have yet to see a 1st gen that left the factory with a frame-mounted class II or III receiver hitch. Maybe it was a special order option to have that.

Come on out to cali and look at mine... Factory installed Draw tite class III frame mounted hitch. It was the only reason we bought the Ex was to tow.
