I keep seeing references to 1st, 2nd and third generation trucks what is this all about??

each generation was only built for a certain number of years 1st is 91-94 i believe 2nd 95-01 3rd 2002-2005 4th 2006-2010, 5TH 2011

It refers to model years:

1st gen = 1991 - 1994
2nd gen = 1995 - 2001
3rd gen = 2002 - 2005

Since you have a Sport Trac though that changes everything.
Gen 1 2001-2005
Gen 2 2007-2010
There was no 2006 Sport Trac.
