Probably a pretty dumb question, but I see alot of posts concerning 1st gen or 2nd gen models. Just wondering what delineates 1st or 2nd generation....

If anyone could clarify what the difference or meaning of each is that would be great.

I do know that 1st generation is a 91-94 and 2nd is 95 abd up

I know that the first generation had the TTB in the front. The second generation had torsion bars up front. That is on the four wheel drives.

And there is a 3rd generation too!

2002 and newer 4 door Explorers are the 3rd Generation.

But, don't get confused with this point...
2002 and new Explorer Sports(2door) and Sport Tracs(4dr truck) still belong to the 2nd generation.

Basically:
91-94: First
95+ : Second
2001+ Sport and SportTrac: 2.5
2002+ 5Door: Third gen

There are many differences between generations such as body, lighting, tailgate, amenities, motors, etc. However, the most significant changes were from 94 to 95 and 2001 to 2002 5 Door.

Alec means the more or less standard Explorer. 2 doors on each side, and the 5th door is the tailgate/hatchback. I call it a 4 door model, but I suppose 5 door also makes sense. A guess a Sport Track would also be kind of a 5 door.

whooooo:o

U know chevy has a convertable SUT (Sport Utility Truck) i think it is an envoy? just a thought.

Huh??? A 4door with a tailgate! That's it!

I was just trying to differentiate between the SportTrac (4 doors) and the fully enclosed model (4 + hatch). Sorry for any confusion. I could call it the "wagon" model ;)
