I've just picked up a permit to go on the beaches on LI, NY. This will be my first time going off road with my 2000 XLT. Can anyone give me some tips on how to prepare my truck and what to expect when I get out there?

make sure you air down a little and dont get on the gas to hard or u will sink

I havent read up on the link i gave yo uin some time.

But make sure you bring a shovel with you IF you happen to get stuck in the sand. It might be a good idea to bring sand bags with you to use for traction while trying to get out of a hole.

story slightly off topic

Last year, my brother and I were hanging out by the entrance to one of the Jax beaches. You came off the pavement, through about 25' of very soft sand (basically through the dune), then onto the harder packed beach itself.
4 or 5 cars and pickups in a row get bogged down in the middle - luckily some good ole boys were there with their 4x4 (chevy:mad:() pulling them out. Strangly, a tarus wagon went right through - didn't even bottom.
The boys finally get bored and leave, and about 3 minutes later, a lincoln navigator pulls up - loaded with smoking hot chicks. Don't even slow down, get right in the middle and bam - stopped dead. After a bit of revving, sand flying everywhere, you get the picture, they get out and start looking for help.
Long story short, my brother and I air them down to about 10#, jump in, and ease them right out. (I guess the driver didn't know gas pedals work in graduations between "off" and "full") Told them about 20 times to make sure they stop at the very first gas station and put air back in the tires, but I to this day don't have any confidence they did it. They were NOT as grateful as they could have been, either - I guess our lack of abercrombie clothes got in the way. :(
MORAL OF THE STORY: air down early, keep moving slow and steady, and have a way to inflate after the fun is over. And, a tow strap wouldn't hurt, just in case.
