I noticed last month my tranny slipped on the 2-3 shift. It's only done it 2 times since. It's like I popped it in neutral for 2 sec then back to drive. I'm pretty sure the fluids never been changed. I don't drive it much and it only has 128 000k on it. Any advice? I'm hoping its just dirty fluid or something minor. I can't afford a rebuild.

with 128k+ on the clock & you not knowing if it has been changed i would drop the pan (or take it in to get flushed) and change that filter. then go from there.

edit: have you checked the fluid? how does it look/smell? is it topped off?

Haven't checked fluid yet. I'll let you know.

Your tranny slipped a month ago and you didn't check to see if the fluid was low or burnt?

Ok, fluid levels fine but didn't look red or dark. Almost clearish. Also had bubbles on the dipsick. Did smell a bit burnt though. How do I get the fluid changed properly? Flushes don't do the filter and when they drop the pan it only does half the fluid......:(

Tranny shops have a machine that will get all of the fluid out and changed.

A lot of times when your tranny is starting to slip and you change the fluid it will get worse. Yours could be a bad valve body gasket though. Let us know how the change works with it.

Likely a blown valve body gasket. Do a search on 2-3 shift flare

It's a simple job, and well under $100. Ford had an update kit for the transmission with a bonded separator plate in place of the gasket. Mine had the 2-3 shift flare and local Ford dealer told me I needed a rebuilt tranny. Charged me $234 to road test it and tell me that. I fixed it myself after that, and that was 3 years and 50K ago. Tranny working fine today, have not been back to a Ford dealer since.

If I leave it will it ruin the tranny?

I noticed my fluid level when checked at operating temp is about 1/2 inch over filled. Should I siphon some out and approx how much would this be?

Is there a Sticky on this procedure here on the forums?
