85 Ranger
Hello,

I'm doing a 2.8 to 4.0 swap. The 2.8 is in an '85 ranger with the BW1350 Xfer case.

The 4.0 is coming from a 93 2wd ranger. I know the 2wd M5R1 won't work unless rebuilt with 4x4 mainshaft and output housing.

What years of the M5R1 4x4 version will bolt up to the BW1350 in my '85?

I notice midwesttrans indicates different part no's for various V6's
http://www.midwesttrans.com/transmissions_retail.htm

What's the difference and which M5R1 4x4 version will bolt up to the BW1350 in my '85?

Thanks.

is there anything wrong with the trans you have? The 4.0 will bolt right up. 4.0, 2.8 and 2.9 use same bellhousing pattern;)

The existing trans is an FM145. The common noted concern is that the FM145 is too weak to handle the 4.0's significantly higher torque output.

I want to make it as bullet-proof as possible without going broke, hence the M5oD.
