2 questions 94 sport 4x4

Hi all I have a 94 Explorer Sport 4x4 with the 5 speed manual Trans it has the electronic shift on the fly push button for the 4x4. I was told 4wheel drive was not hooked up. I am a capable mech but I have never delt with 4x4 stuff. I have checked the switches on the dash they are connected. So where do I start? I just ordered the Chilton manual for it hoping that helps some lol
Next question
The dash is shot sunrott. What's my best option for either redoing dash or replacing it?

I had the local body shop fix mine. I punched a whole in it accidently while it was out. They glued it together, painted it even matched the grain in the vinyl. I think it cost about $90.
