$20 Custom build cold air scoop on stock air intake system! Is this ok or even legal?

Capturing COLD air from infront of the car.

A Stock air box gets nice cold air from the front of the truck as well, maybe try to figure something out that will go from air box to the stock location that will get cold air

Thanks for the Ideas! They are very helpful!

I'm 2 days late to renew my registration. I getter get the girl inspected before I install the Blower, Might even need to take off the scoop to pass. ;)

:salute:

i ran some gutter pipe out thru my fog lights holes on my ranger valance and ran 3" dryer hose from there back to the intake- threw engine codes like crazy when i had the air going directly into the filter so i moved the pipe to put air under the hood and it does fine now

Passed GA emissions with flying colors! (With Scoop ON) Time 2 get started on 2.0 :)

Truck had better passing numbers than last year. :D Either its running better or the extra air just diluted all of the pollution. ;)

You would think that ford engineers would know that an engine needs to Breathe!

I hope I don't throw codes after installing the blower into the intake.

Wish me luck! :D

:salute:

:chug:

Its something of redneck nature that I'd think of only you beat me to it lol :D

OK OK Where's Version 2.0?

Unfortunately all projects take 2 things: Time and Money.

I have been short on both the last few days. But after working 15 hour days, I hopefully will have the money and then make some time for the things that are important to me. My Ex and the "Explorer Forum"! :D

I found a Pro race shop with a Dyno. I hope to work out an arrangement to do some benchmark testing. Maybe Stock, Scoop (no actual ram air on Dyno :( ) then Blower.

Darn then I'll need:

1) Bigger throttle body
2) Improved Cats and Exhaust (Flowmaster?)
3) A Chip or other PCM/ECU improvements for a 1994 4.0

Any Suggestions on the above list? I guess once you get started tinkering it never ends.

 How about a regenerative braking idea? Motor generator on Rear wheels or maybe compressed air? Hey KELSO! They actually have a car that runs on AIR!

OH MY GOD! Stop Me :chug:

OK I'm cool now. :D

A buddy/client of mine says I will blow up my motor If add the Blower! Is that true?

Hey Yall,

My Stuntman/Actor Friend of mine Ellis Edwards http://eestunts.com/ says I should not add a blower to my 230+K mile 1994 Eddie Bauer Ex saying it wont be able to handle it.

Is That true?

At the same time he said the shop next to his has a has a Dyno! :D

How many HP does the 94 Eddie Bauer have with the 4.0?

Will a Chip improve POWER and MPG? Anyone have a 94 with one?
Any suggestions as to what brand is the best? The SCT doesn't seen to cover the 94.

What Intake and Exhaust mods are tried and true?

Your input is greatly appreciated!

Cheers to Yall!

:chug: Its HOT outside.

This thread is interesting. Crazy, but interesting. As far as the long highway jaunt then a cel, have you tried cleaning the maf? My 93 did the same thing as yours. I'd be on the highway for about three or four hours, then a cel with hesitation and chugging. I cleaned the maf(thanks to this site) and I have not had the problem since.(Assuming that all of the tune-up parts have been taken care of) Do a search of the forums and you will find threads on how to clean the maf. Good luck with the "supercharger";)

OK, I need help! Went for a pr. of 900 mile trips nonstop. Damn CEL! Help!

Tried to get some good reading on mileage with the DIY Cold Air Intake.

Once again the dreaded CEL and hesitation came back to haunt me.

Drove all nite Saturday 6:30 PM till 10 AM Sunday. Only stops were for gas, coffee and to walk the dog. First tank was 22+ MPG including some city driving. Fill up in SC next is VA! Made it to 2850 ft with no CEL, start patting myself on the back and next thing I get a CEL.

Pulled over and put in an EGR sensor I pulled from a boneyard. within a minute of driving get a cel that stays on all the way to the last exit in VA 323 I-81. Go to Flying J, fill er up, get an extra large coffee and walk the dog. Oh and put the original EGR sensor back in. Finally make it to PA. NAP TYME!

In PA I swapped the PCM back to the original, changed the oil to Mobile 1 and put a Fram tough Gaurd filter in.

On the way back down south, I detour thru (East bumfu**) Estill SC. Temp was 106 outside. Ran with the AC on. Got a CEL and hesitation at about 400 miles that got so bad I pulled over and put the new PCM back in. Got codes 172, 176 and 513(Bad PCM) with original PCM. Still had CEL and Hesitation as well as lousy gas mileage. Once in SC she sat overnite and has been fine since. Codes 176, 177 from new PCM. O2 both high and low.

It seems that when she gets HOT for an extended period I get the CEL and hesitation. (Usually 300-400 miles nonstop)

Work done to alleviate this problem:
New EGR valve
new plugs, wires
Cleaned MAF and IAC
Changed oil twice
Modified exhaust. ;)
Went to FORD DEALERSHIP. (They said after 232K I need a new truck)

What to do next?

Untill I get the truck running 100% I can't tell if the CAI or blower is helpful.

It seems I need to see James about a datalogger or a Laptop interface to troubleshoot this problem and then reprogram the PCM so the extra air is not just being compensated for by the stock programming.

HELP! Is there a on-the-go laptop interface availble to tune a 1994 EX? I havent found one yet.:(

I'm Back! CAI Version 2.0 installed + Reset PCM. Much Better Now!

Finally reset the 2nd PCM after getting 15 MPG for a couple of tanks. New CAI is in. (Not BLOWER YET) Got 100 miles in the first 1/4 tank! Yeah!

:D

I'll repost after filling the tank. Hwy+ city.

C YA!

:troops:

Got any pics of the new CAI?

Glad to hear your milage is improving, how's the CEL/hesitation issue?

C.

Will post pics when the blower is installed.

Got 20.6 mpg city/hwy with ac on and temps outside in the 100s. :fire:

:troops:

CAI Ver. 3.0 lives! 1.1 MPG or 5% over my previous best! Even w ubiquitous CEL on Hwy

Everything happens for a reason.

I wrecked my Ex Thursday morning and my fender/ bumper were scraping my tire on ever left turn.(CAI Ver. 2.0 was fine, even my son scoffed!)
By Friday afternoon I had pulled out the fender and replaced the front bumper. Problem was Ver 1.0 and 2.0 went right through the lower bumper trim. I didn't want to do that to my new used $35 bumper. Time to go to Lowes!

I picked up a 10 x 6 x 6" Hvac register with a 90 degree elbow built in. Picked up a 6 x 4" reducer and an 18" "Flex a Spout" and headed home.
Total cost about 20 bucks.

I took a couple of $1.29 clamps off of Ver. 1.0 and with some modification ran the 4" flexible spout right into the lower air filter box and my K&N filter.

The 10 x 6 x 6" Hvac register was installed beneath and behind the lower trim
of the front bumper with misc. hardware and attached to the "Flex a spout" with a pair of 4" duct clamps.

I am almost at my destination I g2g. (I'm posting this as I finish my successful trip to PA. from Atlanta. Just me, my dog, my very happy Ex and my laptop on our way to see my Current (wife) :D

Oops she's calling I've g2g, oh and supposedly drive. ;)

I'll be back!

:salute:

Oh, final numbers were 23.57 MPG! Previous best was 22.47 MPG. Now at over 235k miles. :D
