Neighbor mechanic looked at it for me ,said it isn't the master cylinder. No bleed done yet .He replaced the booster. Brake sinking at stop light . Stops fine . Just sinks at light . Any advice welcome please . Anyone estimate what a shop will tell me ?/ cost ? Thanks

First look for any fluid leaks
Check at all 4 brake calipers look for wetness

Why did he think it’s not the master cylinder?

Usually if there is no fluid loss and the brake booster holds vacuum my first suspect is air in the abs system (if recent work was done) or bad seals in the master cylinder

How many miles on the explorer?
Aren’t brake work done other then a new booster?

Hello, thanks for the info. I’m not sure why he said that about the master cylinder I complained to them that they brakes were sinking at a stoplight and first thing he did was put on four new brake pads. And then a brake booster they haven’t gotten around to doing the brake bleed yet the car has 175,000 miles. The sinking occurred before the break work was done and still persists

No bleeding required with just a pad change
Although it maybe a good idea to bleed them if the fluid is still from 2000

So unless you have a leak or a swollen rubber brake hose, the sinking would for sure be caused by a worn out master cylinder

I say this because the system has not run out of fluid
No air has been let into the system
No leaks are present

The next culprit would be the master cylinder is 25 years old and the seals are worn

So save the bleeding for when you swap out the master you will be able to get all new fluid in there

Don’t buy a cheap reman master cylinder

From this list I would get the ac delco (last one listed) or a raebestos for a little cheaper with ac delco being the best of them available
