I had the front and rear differentials serviced on my 2000 Explorer 4.0L SOHC. The mechanic told me that he found some silver particles in the rear diff. fluid. He said that I probably need new bearings. Has anyone else had this problem ? Please share your experience. My Explorer has 130,000 miles on it, trying to figure out whether to get rid of it or repair it. Thanks.

you'll always find a small amount of tiny metal particles in the bottom of your diffs and trans pan. that's why they put magnets in trans pan and power steering pump reservoirs and on drain plugs. these particles are normal and are produced through normal wear. i'm not saying there should be any chunks of metal, but tiny power sized pieces are normal. you'll know if you have a bearing problem when it starts humming/howling. i don't trust mechanics because they'll often show (or tell) you something like this to generate unnecessary repairs.
