The IAC valve stands for Idle Air Control. It's a simple motor that opens and closes to let certain amount of air come into the throttle body at Engine IDLE. It's there to prevent the engine from dying at IDLE.

Most common problem when the engine can't IDLE is either a Bad IAC or Bad MAF (Mass Airflow) Sensor.

Tim, thanks for the response. I did remove the iac and cleaned it with carb cleaner and it seems to have done the trick. If it happens again I will spend the 80 bucks and replace it. Thanks for the help...Sean

I have to clean my IAC every six months. when the cleaning quits working I'll replace it. so far it's worked for 2 years with 4 cleanings.
