2000 explorer xls not starting. help!!!

ok im new to this forum im trying to learn more about my car. my 2000 explorer xls will not start. whenever i start it the engine sputters right back off. i checked to see if the fuel pump was working by disconnecting the line between the tank and the filter, turned the key to on and fuel squirts out. i did the same thing with the filter to see if the filter was clogged but fuel squirts out there too. wat else could it be? my check engine light is on and when i had it scanned i got a p0442 code. does anybody have any idea what else i can check?

Which engine?

P0442: Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)

I doubt that a small leak would prevent the engine from starting and running.

Which engine do you have? If it is the SOHC V6 you may want to look at my helpful thread: Engine No Start Procedure
