I have a 2000 sport w/sohc 4.0 v6. 12,800 miles on it as of this week. Had a problem noticing a shutter after starting and driving about 5 minutes. The night before I brought the vehicle into Ford, the truck acted like it was having a stroke. Started to do it's usual shutter around 1800-2000 rpm's/30-35 mph, but then the power just dramatically dropped, the check engine light came on and I couln't go over 30 mph....I'm assuming this is the "limp mode". They supposably replaced the intake orings and updated the chain tensioners. Got the vehicle back seemed ok for a few days and had it happen again. Not as bad as the night before it went in, but like when I first started noticing it. It feels like holding it at 1800 rpms @30mph, it seems to loose power a bit, when you press down on the accelorator, it seems to hesitate until you back off and press it down again firmly, then the engine kicks up fine. What the hell is going on. I'm guessing such items as TPS, fuel pump, pressure regulator???? Maybe an engine misfire under load?? I just replaced the filter and cleaned the MAF. Any help would be soooo greatfully appreciated. I don't want to have to get rid of this truck and buy my new love.......2001 Lightning!!!!

You may want to reset the computer and see if this clears things. The computer may have read some bogus readings and got stuck with these false readings. If this doesn't work at least you can tell the dealer that you tried it. This way when you are called to pick it up ask what they did and they the service report says that they reset the computer, you can tell them to try again. This will save you a trip to pick it up and then bring it back.

same problem , more info

Today my same problem happened again, except this time I had the windows down and the radio off.......noticed when it happenes, there is a horrid clanking noise comming from the vehicle..........

2nd time to dealer, no success

picked my truck up from the dealer for the 2nd, they still can't replicate the problem. I'd hate to be ford when my truck can't get out of the way of oncomming traffic and I get creamed, I think they have enough legal troubles. I'm in the process of printing out 400 TSB's on the 99 and 2000 explorers and high lighting anny of them that resembles my problem and let them read them. They should have these at the facility, but apparently are too busy to take the time to read, either that or maybe they can't read???

this sounds like aproblem i had. it was due to bad o2 sensors

bad o2 sensors?

how old was your vehicle when you had the problem? Wouldn't a bad sensor register a specific code on an obdII system stating that it was the sensor, my computer is registering nada.

Have a 1994 XLT 4X4 with the check engine light problem. Driving at highway speeds for awhile, engine starts to run bad and then the check engine light comes on. This problem does not happen all the time. Have taken it to Ford dealer 3 times and still no luck on fix. So far they have replaced the MAF (mass airflow sensor) TPS (throttle position sensor) and the last time the fuel pump. ($$$$$$$$$) I think I will go for the PFE and the O2 sensors next This Explorer has only 62,000 miles and I hate to part with it but I might have to trade it in for something dependable if I can't fix it.
