The transmission in my '01 ST does two if strange things. It's done them for a couple of years now (but only over around 4,000 miles). I dropped the trans pan and replaced the filter and put in 4.5 qts of fresh Mercon V, but the oil is still very dirty, no indication of pinkness. I doubt the PO ever had the trans serviced in the 184k it had on it when I bought it. I added a drain plug so I could drain the oil again if that's advisable. This is what it does and I don't know if the 2 things are related. I don't believe they are.

1. Twice in the past year I've had the trans appear to disengage (act like it's in neutral). Both times this happened I was driving up a slight grade, then getting off the gas, coasting and then reapplying some throttle. After 1/2 a second it went back into gear and worked normally. Most times the trans works perfectly normally.

2. If I try to back up on a grade (or back up quickly) the transmission, I assume it's coming from the transmission, make a noise. It almost sounds like the gears are stripping, but it will back up the grade. I'm thinking maybe the reverse bad is slipping? When I backup now I try to be very gentle to avoid this noise.

Almost sounds like a transfer case issue. They are noted for wear and losing reverse. May want to drain and look at TC fluid. And the neutraling can be caused by the range hub slipping because of the wear also.

It's 2WD, so no transfer case or range hub.

I agree with transman , the noise you describe is the dead giveaway of the t-case

That's not good lol, maybe its time for a rebuild

Sure did miss on that diagnosis LOL! I would guess internal issue then. Planetary or maybe low/rev sprag. Keep us posted on progress.
