I just bought a 2001 Explorer Sport that had no radio in it. I purchased a double din head unit and am trying to figure out what exactly I need to do.

1) How do I tell if I have a factory amp? (I dont have the original radio and some of my research suggests the amp was actually in the radio)

2) If it has a factory amp can I/should I bypass it?

3) Do some/all Sports have a subwoofer? If so where is it?

1) You probably don't have an external amp, since Ford stopped doing that in '98, the '97 was the last one with an external amp, unless you had a sub.

2) The factory amp was in the head unit, and if you have an external one, yes, you should bypass it.

3) In the trunk, on the right side, there's a cubby. Do you have a cubby or a speaker grill there?
If you have a cubby, no subwoofer, and easy install of a head unit. Just needs a wiring harness.

Thank you. I have the cubby.

I cut the cubby out of my '02 Sport and installed an aftermarket Explorer sub box for a 10" - don't remember who made it and I think they still show up once in a while. There is a lip on the cubby and I cut it flush and the box fits fine.

You will have to do a little trimming on the factory radio bezel as well... only two opposite sides - but my old memory doesn't remember which 2 sides you have to remove the lip on... but only 2.

Shop Manual Wiring Diagrams for the audio system can be sent if required.

Good luck. :biggthump

Can I get a copy of these for a 97 with the radio that has the auto set button?

Thanks.

Sorry my shop manuals only cover 2000-2003. There is a thread on here with radio diagrams. I'll see if I can find it when I get home tonight.
